Soul Rebel Digest Vol 9.24

Everybody loves a snack!

I lovvvveeee snacks!

When it comes to snacking, it's easy to reach for high calorie, pre packaged foods. They're convenient & for generations society has taught families to put these foods on a pedestal, making them the 'forbidden fruits' & leaving you wanting more:
"You have to finish your dinner before you can have dessert"
"You can have your sweets if you eat 5 more bites of veggies"

Know that you do not need to exclude ANY foods from your diet, it all comes down to the bigger picture, things like:

  • How much?

  • How often?

  • What are your physical & mental health goals?

  • Where are you getting the bulk of your nutrition from?

More on this below.

But now, what to snack on?

Your best friend for snacks is fresh fruit & vegetables. That sounds boring, but it doesn't need to be.
If you're used to snacking on bags of chips, cans of soft drink, plain old toast or ultra processed 'health bars', your taste buds may take a bit of adjusting.
But the flavours, textures, juices & nutrients you get from keeping your snacks fresh will benefit your physical & mental health, performance & recovery far more than consistently reaching for a packet. They don't call them The Good Mood Foods for nothing! Taking 5 minutes to yourself to enjoy your fresh snack can also help to build a better relationship with food & appreciation for having access to good quality produce!

Keep anything from the 'snack' isle at the supermarket for a time where you can truly sit & enjoy it - be present & no feelings of guilt.

**Note the above challenge doesn't state "DO NOT EAT xyz". It simply challenges you to be prepared with fresh snacks to optimise your nutrient intake & decrease or eliminate the urge to snack on processed foods on a regular basis.

Now if you need to regularly snack throughout the day or you find yourself out of control reaching for the nearest packet of sugar, it might actually be worth stepping back & taking a look at how you are fuelling yourself within your meals.
Are you eating enough?
Have you got a ratio that works for you between carbs, fats & proteins?
Have you tried eating meals at different times of day?
Are you skipping meals?
